Starting from the Solkusten as a base and experiencing the whole of Spain by train is a dream for many. The high-speed train is well developed and there are three train companies that compete. The best competition and thus the lowest prices are in the southern and eastern parts. Back in 1992, Spain showed its ambition and opened the first line between Madrid and Seville - where the world exhibition Expo was housed.
The major hub is, of course, Madrid - but the lines are gradually being expanded and now, at the latest, it is possible to go from Malaga to Granada in one hour and twenty minutes. Then you have arrived at the last stronghold of the Moors and are close to wonderful skiing in the Sierra Nevada.
For example, if you are in Madrid and want to get to Barcelona, there are 4 competing companies: AVE, Avlo, Ouigo and Iryo. Prices have been pushed to an average of €30 - which is hard to match with any other mode of travel. The low-cost airlines continue to expand their routes, so we can hope that this puts price pressure on the western and northern parts as well. As an example, the distance Madrid - La Coruna is €58.
There are many more fantastic train journeys to discover Spain: The Transcantábrico, The Al Andalus, Galicia's tourist trains, La Robla Express, Tren dels Llacs, The Cervantes Train - etc. Read more on Spain's official website - click HERE.
