It's finally the month of August, which means the long-awaited vacation for many. There are only a few days left until Magala's Feria and the big folk festival. Feria is a festival for young and old with lots of entertainment, music, rides, horse drawn carriages, food, dancing and beautifully decorated streets. Feria is something that is held in every village and town across the country and something that the locals hold very dear. As a tourist, it is of course also a fun experience and a good insight into Spanish culture. It is a festive and happy holiday where you spend time with family and friends as many dress up a little extra. The women often dress in colorful, patterned flamenco dresses with large flowers in their hair and the men wear a special traditional costume. You invest a lot of time, money and dedication in your clothing in order to wear it with pride during the Feria week.
Málaga's Feria, along with that of Seville (celebrated in April), are the largest held in the province of Andalusia. This colorful street festival opens this year at midnight on 11/8 on Malaga's most popular beach, La Malagueta, followed by a lavish fireworks show from the port, to continue for 8 days. In Malaga, the Feria is held in the city center during the day, during the evening and throughout the night the party moves to the Real de Cortijo de Torres, which is a bit outside the city center. To get there, buses run non-stop 24 hours a day. It is a large amusement park with as many as 200 "casetas", which are like tents where food, drinks and modern music as well as classic flamenco music are served.
This event attracts millions of visitors every year and the Spanish travel across the country to take part in it. Overall, Malaga is a vibrant coastal city known for its fantastic culture, bursting with life and joy with hospitable residents. If you haven't experienced Malaga before, we can warmly recommend a visit now during Feria week for an extra wonderful experience.
